Heidi Tuason, MPH Candidate
Heidi worked with a women’s reproductive health NGO in the Philippines called Likhaan Center for Women’s Health. Likhaan focuses on the provision of reproductive health direct services, as well as advocacy, policy, research, and community organizing with poor and marginalized women in the Philippines, a country in which contraception is not widely available and abortion is illegal, and more than half a million (usually unsafe) abortions occur. As the Reproductive Health Research, Policy, & Advocacy intern, she worked on various projects including: assisting in the collection and analysis of women’s stories of illegal and unsafe abortion for use in a Likhaan report and documentary about abortion in the Philippines; the production of technical assistance and policy educational sheets for use in the advocacy for the passage of the Reproductive Health Bill in Philippine Congress; conducting interviews with community health workers, community leaders and Likhaan staff about RH issues during regular site visits to communities; and assisting with written and visual documentation of Likhaan events, trainings, and conferences.
